Bella rises, looking at her reflection on a pool of water. All is calm. Still, she musters the courage to confront Absalom. She follows him along the railroad tracks, a shadow on the desert horizon. Suddenly, there is no one. Absalom’s vanished. He was once inside her, he was her. No more. Back to the railroad tracks, Bella finds a sleeping Alex beside the broken guitar. She tries to play a little, and cuts her finger. She lets the blood fall on the sand and then buries it. The cycle of reincarnation is broken. They can finally be whomever they want to.
